Synopsis
Carmen is a four-act opera composed by Georges Bizet that premiered in Paris in 1875. The story is set in Seville, Spain and follows the turbulent love affair between the fiery and independent woman, Carmen, and the soldier Don José.
The opera begins with a scene in a square where a group of soldiers are on duty. Carmen, a factory worker, enters the square and captures the attention of the men with her seductive dance. Don José is drawn to Carmen, but their relationship becomes complicated as she is also involved with the toreador Escamillo.
Don José's obsession with Carmen leads him to abandon his military duties and join a group of smugglers. Carmen eventually grows tired of Don José and turns her affections towards Escamillo, which leads to a tragic confrontation between Don José and Carmen.
The opera features memorable songs such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song and is known for its passionate and dramatic storyline. Despite its initial mixed reception, Carmen has become one of the most performed operas in the world and is considered a masterpiece of the operatic repertoire.
