We are thrilled to announce our entire 2021 Artistic Programme including 7 productions for you to enjoy over 10 festival days this August. Our varied and exciting programme this summer includes; The Elixir of Love (Donizetti), Hansel & Gretel (Humperdinck), Peter and the Wolf (Prokofiev), Ariel (Jonathan Dove), Clairières dans le ciel (Boulanger), On Wenlock Edge (Vaughan Williams), and The Quartet for the End of Time (Messiaen). Join us at Waterperry this August, and dive deep into the beautiful music and nature we will have on offer. Explore the hidden corners of our stunning gardens; you never know what you might find.

2021 Festival Programme
The Elixir of Love
This comic masterpiece headlines our 2021 festival, with evening performances hosted in the open-air on the front lawn of Waterperry House. This production will be conducted by Festival Music Director Bertie Baigent, directed by Dan Ayling, and designed by Ana Inés Jabares-Pita. Performed in an English translation by Kelly Rouke, and accompanied by our very own Waterperry Opera Festival Orchestra.

Hansel & Gretel
Join us for a new interdisciplinary chamber version of this timeless fairytale. Running just over an hour, with no interval, afternoon shows will be performed within the Waterperry woodland and are perfect for all the family. Directed by Associate Artistic Director Rebecca Meltzer with Music Director Ashley Beauchamp, this production incorporates BSL, and will be presented in a new English translation by the creative team.

Peter and the Wolf
A new immersive sight-specific production of Sergei Prokofiev's beloved symphonic fairytale for children will be directed by Artistic Director & CEO Guy Withers and conducted by Bertie Baigent. This perfect family event will introduce children to classical instruments through vibrant storytelling. Performances will take place around the lily pond in the gardens, and immerse families in the beauty of nature.

Quartet for the End of Time
This late-night music and light installation will be a ground-breaking event. The Quartet for the End of Time by Messiaen will be performed in Waterperry’s impressive Amphitheatre and reimagined by visual artist Anne-Héloise Dautel. Led from the piano by Bertie Baigent, audiences can enjoy this event as a stand-alone performance or as part of their wider festival experience.

Ariel
Following its success in 2020, Jonathan Dove’s Ariel will return to the Mary Rose Garden. Directed by Rebecca Meltzer, this intimate production offers an insight into Ariel’s world following the spirit’s release from Prospero’s command. Join us in the Rose Garden and witness it first hand. Daniella Sicari will return to lead this captivating one-woman show.

Clairières dans le ciel
In partnership with Oxford Lieder, Emma Doherty will direct newly-staged performances of Clairières dans le ciel composed by Lili Boulanger, and performed by soprano Siân Dicker, in the woodland at Waterperry. Audiences can enjoy this event as a stand-alone performance or as part of their wider festival experience.

On Wenlock Edge
In partnership with Oxford Lieder, Emma Doherty will direct newly-staged performances of On Wenlock Edge composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams, performed by tenor Ted Black, in the woodland at Waterperry. Audiences can enjoy this event as a stand-alone performance or as part of their wider festival experience.

Young Artist Events
Our Young Artist events will be performed, directed and conducted all by the emerging talent on our Young Artist Programme. Particularly, the Young Artist Opera Scenes are a perfect opportunity to witness emerging talent perform well-known and beloved aria and ensembles, free of charge.

2021 Festival Talks This year we have an exciting array of pre-show talks on offer before various performance including: 'Raise a glass with The Elixir of Love' with the opera's designer Ana Inés Jabares-Pita & conductor Bertie Baigent, 'The Future of Opera' with Henry Little from Opera UK, Monique Foulger from Opera Holland Park and Isabella Pitman from National Student Opera Society.
